Ramiz Alia

Born in 1925 in Shkodra. Graduated from the Party School in Moscow (1954), Mr. Alia is one of the most important personalities of the Albanian Labour Party, who led Albania between the years 1944 – 1990. During this period, Mr. Alia, has performed high duties in the course of conducting the Albanian Labour Party, consequently the Albanian State.

Among the most important duties have been: First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Youth Branch of the Albanian Labour Party (1949 – 1955), Minister of Education and Culture (1955 – 1958), member of the Political Bureau and Secretary of the Central Committee of the Albanian Labour Party for the ideology (1961 – 1985), member of the parliament, Chairman of the Presidium of the Popular Assembly (1982 – 1990), First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Albanian Labour Party (1985 – 1990) and Chair of the Presidential Council (1991).

After the first multiparty elections held in Albania on Mach 31, 1991, the new pluralist parliament dominated by the members of the parliament of the Albanian Labour Party, with the proposal of the Albanian Labour Party, chose Mr. Alia, President of the Republic, on April 30, 1991. Following the anticipated parliamentary elections of March 22, 1992 where the coalition of the opposition won, on April 3, 1992, Mr. Alia, resigned from his tenure of President.
